Welcome to Dads Riding Bikes
Hey there! I’m thrilled to have you join our cycling community dedicated to dads who are passionate about cycling and the adventure of fatherhood. This blog is your go-to resource for navigating the exhilarating world of cycling while juggling the joys and responsibilities of being a devoted dad and a supportive spouse.
A Little About Me
I’m a stay-at-home dad originally from the Midwest. However, I’ve been happily calling Denver, Colorado, my home since 2015. Located along the Rocky Mountains, Denver provides the perfect backdrop for getting out on the bike and raising a family.
My journey into both cycling and fatherhood has been quite the ride. Married to my incredible cycling enthusiast wife in 2017, we welcomed our first daughter into our family in 2021. And in 2023, our family expanded as we welcomed our second daughter into our midst
How It All Began
Cycling became a part of my life back in 2012 when I acquired my first road bike, a 2011 Trek Alpha. Initially, it was a way to add some cardio into my weight lifting routine. However, as the miles accumulated, a spark was ignited, and my love for cycling began to take off.
My journey took an exciting twist when I met my wife while rock climbing in 2015. Eager to share my passion, I introduced her to the world of cycling in 2017, which, much to my delight, quickly became her favorite activity too.
A Deeper Dive
While I dabbled in cycling for years, it wasn’t until my wife completed the Triple Bypass bike ride in the summer of 2022, just one year postpartum, that I was inspired to really dive deeper into the sport of cycling. The Triple Bypass ride is a marquee cycling Fondo in Colorado, which climbs three passes (hence the name Triple Bypass), Juniper Pass, Loveland Pass and Vail Pass, taking you from Evergreen Colorado to Avon Colorado, traveling 118 miles and almost 11,000 feet of elevation gain, much of the ride takes place above 10,000 feet above sea level.
Then in the fall of 2022, my wife and I decided we wanted to work on having our second child and agreed that during her pregnancy I could focus on improving my cycling. I upgraded to a 2022 Trek Emonda SL7 eTap in October, which marked a turning point, propelling me from a casual cyclist to an enthusiast eager to conquer new horizons.
Now, let’s be clear – I’m not a cycling pro by any stretch of the imagination. But that’s the beauty of it – I’ve gone all in on the sport. In 2023, I went from riding just once a week in the summer and not being able to complete a 2.5 hour ride outside without having debilitating leg cramps, to finishing the 2023 Triple Bypass and averaging 3-4 days a week and 7 hours on the bike!
Cycling and Fatherhood
One of the things that makes cycling a remarkable activity for dads is its flexibility. Unlike team sports, you don’t need to synchronize schedules with others. Just hop on your bike, whether it’s out the door for an open-road adventure or on the trainer during those precious quiet moments.
My mission for “Dads Riding Bikes” is simple yet powerful: to forge a community of like-minded cyclists, dads, and parents. This platform is a testament that becoming a dad doesn’t necessitate shelving your cycling dreams. It’s about making it work – and that means coordinating with your partner, committing to your own growth, and embracing the unpredictability of parenting.
So, whether you’re an experienced cyclist or a newbie on two wheels, “Dads Riding Bikes” is here to inspire, share, and connect. Let’s ride on together and prove that the journey of fatherhood is even more exhilarating when fueled by the love of cycling.
Ride on,
